MBSE Craftsmanship with SysML – Motivation, Patterns and Tools

Ein Vortrag von Tim Weilkiens

Keynote at 10th MODPROD Workshop, Feb 3rd 2016, Linköping University, Sweden.

The INCOSE Vision 2020 says that the future of systems engineering will be model-based. The next INCOSE Vision 2025 says that model-based systems engineering (MBSE) will be the norm for systems engineering.

However many companies that engineer systems do not use MBSE yet or they are struggling with introducing MBSE to their organization. MBSE is not just another methodology. It is a paradigm shift and requires besides learning the methods and modeling languages a cultural change.

The first stop on your way to MBSE should be MSSE: model-supported systems engineering. The engineering is not based on models, but the models support your engineering. Initially forget comprehensive MBSE processes. Improve your modeling craftsmanship and learn basic patterns and tools. MSSE is a low hanging fruit: low effort and high value.

When your engineers are modeling craftspersons, you have reached the MSSE base camp and you can start your climb to real MBSE.
